North Dakota 80 MPH Speed LimitUpdated 5 days ago
Effective August 1, 2025, North Dakota has increased the speed limit on rural stretches of Interstates 94 and 29 from 75 mph to 80 mph, aligning with neighboring South Dakota and Montana. The legislation, known as House Bill 1298, was signed into law by Governor Kelly Armstrong on May 5, 2025.
The bill also introduces a new system for calculating speeding fines. On interstate roads, the minimum fine is $20 or $5 per mile per hour over the speed limit, whichever is greater. On non-interstate roads, fines are $3 per mile per hour over the limit. Fines for speeding in construction zones have also increased from $80 to $150.
This move makes North Dakota the ninth state in the U.S. to permit 80 mph speeds on interstate highways, while Minnesota remains the only neighboring state with a maximum speed limit of 70 mph.
