Hydrogen sulfide (H₂S) is a colorless gas known for its characteristic smell of rotten eggs. It is naturally produced during the decomposition of organic matter and is commonly found in oil and gas industries, sewers, and wastewater treatment plants.
Why is H₂S Dangerous?
- Highly toxic even at low levels.
- Can cause respiratory failure and death.
- Flammable and explosive risk.
Safety Limits
- OSHA limit: 20 ppm (ceiling).
- NIOSH recommended: 10 ppm for short exposure.
- IDLH: 100 ppm (immediate danger).
Safety Measures
- Use H₂S detectors and alarms.
- Wear respirators in high-risk areas.
- Train workers and have emergency plans.
